Outer Ring was formed in 2017 by it’s core trio, Jamie Davis, L.J. Cates, and Khari Wynn. Jamie and L.J met at a blues jam at a the now defunct Kudzus, and not long after began playing together backing a few different artists around the midsouth. The meteoric arrival of Khari Wynn (longtime musical director and guitar player for Public Enemy) solidified a groove that could not be ignored. Inspired by legendary funky rhythm sections such as The Meters, the Stax house band, the JB’s, and more modern acts such as the Dap Kings, and Kamasi Washington, the trio decided to set out on their own creating a unique sound in this mold.
After working together on Wynn’s first New Saturn Collective release and being offered a weekly gig on Beale Street at People’s Pool Hall, the Outer Ring was born! Through the gig at People’s and another weekly at Canvas of Midtown, Aubrey Mccrady (guitar) and Josh Aguilar (alto sax) have become indispensible members of the group as well as many others who now make up an all star list of Memphis talent that plays with the band regularly! Outer Ring strives to explore the in sound from way out whether unaccompanied or backing other talents such as the powerful and euphonious vocal of oft associated singer Nettie Parr!
